KATY GRANNAN
Katy Grannan’s ‘Boulevard’ series establishes a meeting point between portraiture and street photography. For three years Grannan walked the streets of Los Angeles and San Fransisco finding sitters and photographing them in the stark California sun. In each picture the concentrated lighting and generic white walled backgrounds serve to highlight the colourful, weary and intriguing faces of the subjects.
Each picture is imbued with a heavy sense of narrative, evoking a sense of the lives lead by the people presented to us. The photographs are somehow joyfully sombre, and capture their strange subjects with a fascinating intensity.
A selection of Katy Grannan’s ‘Boulevard’ series are currently being shown as part of the Out of Focus: Photography exhbition at the Saatchi gallery (25 April - 22 July 2012)
